What is the max. height your deck can be before you have to install a railing?

The height varies from location to location. Some building departments require a handrail on all decks regardless of height. Others are decks to build with no railing on rather high decks. To determine the requirements in your area you will need to contact your building department. Some building departments have put their requirements online so you might want to check there first.
