TOPIC: Replacing Horse Barn Floor

Replacing Horse Barn Floor 3 Years, 2 Months ago
Hello,

I have a 32' x 54' pole barn with a dirt floor. It was originally built as a horse stable. All but the tack room and one pen have been removed, giving me a large open space to convert into a workshop. I'm looking to install a deck type floor foundation. Since it is a pole barn, would it be possible to use Dek-Block piers as a solution for a free floating floor within this building?

I'm thinking of the following steps:
1. Remove about 16-20" of dirt from the floor and level.
2. Apply a 6 mil plastic vapor barrier.
3. Cover with a couple of inches of gravel.
4. Place Dek-Block piers in formation along leveled floor to allow for 16" or 24" spacing.
5. Build floor framing using 2 x 6 boards.
6. Cover frame with 3/4" flooring substrate.

I haven't figured out the final wood surface yet as I'm looking at a couple of different options. I'll either go with plywood or planking.

Does this sound like a workable solution? It wouldn't be tied in to the walls or support posts.

Thanks in advance,
Terry

I was planning on doing something very similiar, but it was not previously a horse barn - just an enclosed pole shed. The area I'm flooring is 14x24 and somewhat unlevel. I was planning on using 2x6 decking for the floor surface. Is a vapor barrier and gravel necessary? I had not planned on this, but then saw this post. I live in Central Alabama if that makes a difference.
