Frank and Adele - Pool Deck Project
Summer 2004

5/29/04 - Memorial Day Weekend...

I got the wood delivered from Home Depot to complete the main deck. That's a lot of wood, and the kids immediately found something to climb- until I cut the straps...   This is as far as I got. The piers are a real pain to position. They have to be exact, or the deck may be askew. And once they're positioned, they need to be leveled, which is also a pain. Once the positioning and leveling is done, I cut them to length using the laser level.

It seems no matter how hard you try to level these things out, either things settle after they're in, or whatever, but I needed to adjust as I started laying the joists down. I ended up with a ton of these little wood chips. Some places I had to cut, other places, I had to put some of these chips under the 4x4's. All in all, everything went well, and there are no boards teetering.   This is the completed frame.

The plans don't mention these spacers, but since I had to join boards together in the middle, the joints seemed to bow. To keep them evenly spaced, I just threw some 2x4 scraps between them. That made them much straighter.   6/7/04 - About 1/3 of the surface planks are done. I still need to do some cross-bracing around the perimeter on the deeper side (only need to cross-brace if it's over 30" high), and I have to screw those surface planks down. At this point, they're just screwed down on the ends for placement.
Still to go:
- finish deck surface & screw down
- cross-bracing
- steps
- bench
- railing
- sanding rough edges
